Anti - diabetic Effect of Sodium
نویسنده
چکیده
Many attempts have been made to treat diabetes mellitus with oral medic ation, but none of them seems to have been successful. It has been known that a decoction of Eunymus alata sieb growing in Japan has a blood sugar lowering ac tion. The effective component was isolated, crystallized, and identified as oxaloacetic acid (OAA) by infrared spectral analysis . Stable salt of O AA (OAA sodium) was prepared. The administration of OAA-sodium brought about lowering of the blood sugar level in normal and alloxan diabetic animals. The same drug was given to diabetic patients, and it was found effective in all of 10 of Type I and in 6 of 11 of Type II diabetics according to Yamakawa nd Kurokawa's classifica tion. A long-term administration of OAA-sodium induced hyperplasia nd prolifera tion of the islet cells of the pancreas in rats, but no mentionable changes were found in the other organs. It is strongly suspected that OAA-sodium stimulates insulin secretion through some unknown mechanism.

Gastroprotective effect of sodium hydrosulfide against indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer in diabetic rats
Introduction: The incidence rate of gastric erosions and ulcers in diabetic patients are higher due to failure of mucosal antioxidant defense and maintain enough blood flow. The present study evaluated the gastro-protective effect of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) against indomethacin-induced gastric lesions in diabetic rats. Methods: In order to test anti-ulcer activity of NaHS against indomet...

Background and Objective: Due to the presence of some evidence for anti-diabetic and antioxidant activity of Tribulus terrestris (TT), this study was designed to investigate the anti-nociceptive effect of TT in streptozotocin-diabetic rats using formalin test and hot tail immersion tests. Materials and Methods: Rats were divided into control, TT-treated control, diabetic, sodium salicylate (SS)...

Diabetic neuropathic pain, an important micro vascular complication in diabetes mellitus, has been recognized as one of the most difficult types of pain to treat. Lack of understanding of etiology involved, inadequate relief, development of tolerance and potential toxicity of classical anti-nociceptive agents warrants the investigation of newer agents to relieve this pain. The aim of the presen...
متن کاملAnti-diabetic Effect of Portulaca oleracea (Purslane) Seeds in Alloxan-induced Diabetic Rats
Background and Aims: Portulaca oleracea (purslane) herb has renewed an interest in medicinal plants because its aerial parts usage generally does not elicit any side effects. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the anti-diabetic effect of hydro-ethanolic extract of P. oleracea seeds in alloxan- induced diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: In the test group, diabetic rats received hyd...
